In honor of the upcoming 5th Annual Festival, we’re sponsoring a contest in which you can design the commemorative poster! Read all about it at the website, but read fast, because the deadline is June 30th. (It says June 15th on the website, but what do they know?). Entries have already been received* that include a colorful layout featuring the line "Five Years and Still Smelling Strong"; another depicting the characters in "Twilight" refusing to attend the festival; and another showing our mascot, "Gertie the Garlic Bulb", being smashed in a garlic press. So, get out your 120 Pack of Crayola Crayons** - you could win $100 cash prize and $50 worth of Minnesota grown garlic!*** A BUNCH OF FOOLS TO PERFORM We like fools. An old German proverb says "Fools and children speak the truth," and another claims that "fools never die out." So, we like them, and count ourselves among them. And we book them to perform at the festival. We're referring to The Narren of New Ulm****, a wacky, sometimes scary, bunch of wooden masked, crazily costumed characters who will tell us of their village and teach us their dances.
MN Garlic Festival is the proud recipient of a SMAHC grant for 2010. *"So Much Art Here, Cripes!" grants are given to organizations (quoting the SMAHC Mission Statement) to encourage "events to produce such an overwhelming abundance of art, music and theatre that the audience's heads explode," and their Strategic Plan includes "giving unrestricted money to fools to hire other fools." When we asked if that would include people who produce a garlic festival, they handed us a check before we even finished the paperwork. And we intend to spend it on things like those last two paragraphs.*****
Speaking of too much art, you probably remember that the festival hosts an Youth Art Competition & Exhibit each year. Once again, we are offering Art Workshops throughout the summer, led by our capable Arts Intern, Benjamin Boor, and you can bring one to your organization, fair, event, youth group, home school or community. Read more at: http://www.sfa-mn.org/garlicfest/youth_art_workshops.html. You can also download an entry form for the competition on the website. Workshops are already booked at GrazeFest at Mill City Farmers Market, and Dassel/Cokato Community Education.
