This is a 201 level event.
Join us for an engaging and informative event focused on reducing winter feed costs, reclaiming hybrid poplar land, and using technology to make intensive grazing less work. This tour will cover various aspects of livestock and land management with a focus on soil health and livestock integration onto crop ground.
Field Day Leaders: Langdon Collum, CF Cattle/Host Farm; Jonathan Kilpatrick, SFA; Jane Jewett, MISA/UMN
Event Highlights:
- Start with the Cows: Experience a live demonstration of moving cows using batt latches, which are programmable electric gates that will open and move the cows at your scheduled time. This part of the tour will showcase effective techniques for managing livestock movement.
- Forage Recovery on Perennial Pastures: Explore the benefits and strategies for forage recovery on perennial pastures, ensuring sustainable grazing practices.
- Cleared Hybrid Poplar Field: Learn about our efforts to clear a hybrid poplar field originally planted for biomass production. We’ll see a complex cover crop planted in this field for early spring grazing.
- Yearlings on Cover Crops: Head to the south place to observe yearlings grazing on cover crops. Discover how annual crops can be used to enhance soil health and create a forage chain for grazing.
- Reducing Winter Feed Costs: Langdon will talk about how he has been able to cut his winter hay feeding by over half by planting annuals such as corn and sorghum sudan mixed with other species for winter grazing.
- Ending at Rose City Bar & Grill: The event will conclude at the Rose City Bar & Grill, where we’ll provide burgers made from the neighbors beef and sides. This will provide an opportunity for further discussion, networking, and Q&A. To ensure a plate please register in advance.
Registration: It is free to attend. Advance registration requested, walkups welcome.
