Fresh Starts Farm owned by East Central Chapter SFA member Rye Carlson is an organic grain farm that grows corn, soybeans and sunflowers with early interseeded companion cover crops. Buckwheat, mustards, peas, and other common cover crops in mixes are used to suppress weeds and replace the cultivator in an ideal year.
They also supply an abundance of other ecological services including improving soil health and tilth, increasing soil biological activity, reducing erosion, creating beneficial insect habitat and ecological nutrient cycling. Some covers are suppressed with an inter-row crimper. Others are left to grow and some are harvested with the dominant cash crop.
During the farm tour there will be a shovel test demonstration. Join the tour and see.
Registration: It is free to attend. Advance registration requested, walkups welcome.

SFA staff and volunteers occasionally take photos during our workshops, cafe chats and field days for promotional purposes and to use as documentation of events to share with our funders. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let our event host know — we’ll make every effort to make sure you are not photographed.
